Therapeutic Drug Monitoring
Many diseases can now be successfully treated with the adequate medication. In order to achieve the desired effect, to minimize side-effects and to avoid over- as well as under-treatment, it may be essential to control the blood concentration of the administered medications.
This is referred to as "Therapeutic drug monitoring" (TDM). For certain drugs such as anticonvulsive and psychotropic agents, immunsuppressants and cardiac therapeutic substances as well as oral antidiabetics control of blood concentrations is quite common to improve monitoring of the patient. The concentrations measured are compared with recommended levels for each substance. If necessary dose can be adapted.
